Purification of body, speech and mind

To awaken to your true nature you need to purify body, speech and mind. Just know that this purification could take years and that it requires a willingness to feel not just pleasant sensations, but also unpleasant ones. Do not practice this if you don’t want to feel unpleasantness. Also, if you’ve been through traumatic experiences like violence, addictions, abuse of any kind or severe depression, seek professional help. Meditation alone is not enough. Plus, a sudden opening to the nature of mind and phenomena, when one is not ready, could unleash anxiety, physical pain, fear and much confusion.

The best conditions to practice meditation is when things are ok, when emotional/psychological issues have been properly dealt with and when you have time to practice.

You only need two steps to purify body, speech and mind, so that awakening happens. The steps are:

  1. Effortless awareness. Notice that in order to be aware of the breath, you don’t need to exert any effort. Awareness happens by itself.
  2. Let things be as they are. Sometimes you breathe slow, other times you breathe fast. If you don’t interfere, the breath will happen at its own pace. Know that no phenomena remains the same, all phenomena is dynamic. This is the wholesome state of things: impermanent, always changing.

These are the only 2 steps you need to purify your experience from delusion, craving and aversion. So, if we practice with the previous example, you can effortlessly be aware of the breath exactly as it is. You will see how an effortless awareness of the dynamic nature of the breath will begin to affect the rest of the body. When awareness expands and touches the rest of the body, its purification will begin.

Purification of body

Become effortlessly aware of your body exactly as your body is. This means that, without exerting any effort, you feel:

  • Pleasant sensations exactly as they are: pleasure, bliss, rapture, satisfaction of hunger, etc.
  • Unpleasant sensations exactly as they are:
  • Neither pleasant nor unpleasant sensations as they are
  • Emotions exactly as they are
  • Body temperature exactly as it is
  • Hard, soft and liquid body parts exactly as they are
  • Bones, muscles, tendons, skin, hair, nails, organs exactly as they are
  • Bodily fluids exactly as they are

If body is effortlessly seen exactly as it is, one will see its dynamic, non-static nature.

Purification of speech

Become effortlessly aware of speech exactly as speech is. This means that, without exerting any effort, you notice:

  • Your inner voice exactly as it is
  • Your mental mouth exactly as it is
  • Your inner verbal ideas exactly as they are
  • Your verbal intention exactly as it is
  • Your inner verbal silence exactly as it is
  • Your verbal vibrations of the voice exactly as they are

If speech is effortlessly seen exactly as it is, one will see its dynamic, non-static nature.

Purification of mind

Become effortlessly aware of mind exactly as mind is. This means that, without exerting any effort, you notice:

  • Mental sensations exactly as they are: mental sounds, mental images, mental smells, mental tactile sensations, mental flavours, etc.
  • Mental functions exactly as they are: Perception, awareness, categorisation, discernment, cognition, creation of concepts, etc.
  • Mental narratives exactly as they are: Stories of what you think its happening, of what you think it happened or will happen, whether they are accurate or not, whether they are real or not.
  • Beliefs/opinions exactly as they are: Ideas regarding people, society, religion, reality, etc. that lack proof or evidence.
  • Mental concepts of reality as it appears right now, as it is: mental shapes of your head, teeth, bones; mental shape of objects like the table, floor; names imposed on objects like sky, table, window, car, etc.

If mind is effortlessly seen exactly as it is, one will see its dynamic, non-static nature.

Thanks to of the effortless awareness of reality as it is, the mind will become purified of craving, greed, anger, pride, blindness, ignorance, fear, desire and doubt. This will lead to the arising of the following factors of awakening:

  • Bliss
  • Serenity
  • Awareness of all
  • Equanimity

These factors must also be seen effortlessly exactly as they are. If they are seen in this way, one will see their dynamic, non static nature. Each will arise freely until freedom is achieved.
